Rewe embarks on RFID roll-out

9 05 2008

Leading German retailer, Rewe Group, is extending its use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. The company has successfully trialled RFID at its distribution centre in Norderstedt, and will roll it out to other logistics facilities at Wiesloch, Rosbach and Rüsseina during 2008. A company spokesman said that the knowledge gained from this year’s experience will help further roll-outs to other sites in 2009/10.

As part of the process, suppliers have been requested to make use of electronic data interchange (EDI), as well as use RFID tagging on all deliveries to Rewe’s warehouses. Speaking of the policy, General Manager of IT & Logistics, Erich König, said, “The suppliers benefit from our RFID roll-out. A company cross-flow of information allows a reduction in process costs and an improvement in process quality.”
